Managed Burns

It used to be that fire suppression was the major focus of land managers. They have since recognized the risk created by allowing a years-long build up of forest fuel. Now, managed - or prescribed - fire is used responsibly with other non-burning methods to restore and maintain a healthy eco-system.

Wild or managed, fire produces smoke and smoke impacts air quality. To protect public health, the Division of Air Quality and state/federal land managers worked cooperatively to establish the Utah Interagency Smoke Management Program.

The Program details ways to coordinate prescribed fire activities, minimize smoke impacts, and establish emergency action plans. The steps can protect the public from smoke impacts and allow fire to be used in its natural role in maintaining healthy ecosystems.
